Viagra is the name of the erectile dysfunction drug, which has been around since the late 1980s. But the drug has been used to treat erectile dysfunction since at least its introduction in 1998. Now, researchers from San Francisco and Washington University have studied whether it could work to treat men who have trouble getting or keeping an erection. Their findings, published Friday in the journal American Urological Association Journal, are promising.
Viagra has been studied for over a decade as a treatment for men with erectile dysfunction. It is now being used in conjunction with other erectile dysfunction treatments, including the, and, which have been shown to work by increasing blood flow to the penis. The study, published Friday in the journal, tested whether the drug could be an effective treatment for men with erectile dysfunction who have had problems with having an erection.
The research team, led by Irwin Goldstein at the University of Texas at Austin, tested the drug with men who were not getting or keeping an erection. They tested the drug on patients who had an erection that was not in the desired or desired state of arousal for about four hours after taking Viagra, which was then tested on those who were not getting an erection.
"We found that the drug could increase the amount of blood flow to the penis in people who were not getting an erection. It could also decrease the time it takes for blood to reach the penis," Goldstein said in a news release. "And it was effective in patients who were not getting an erection."
Goldstein said he and his team have been studying the drug's ability to treat men with ED. "These studies are preliminary, but we think it may be useful for many men with ED," he said.
A few of the men with ED who were taking Viagra had trouble getting an erection because they were not getting an erection.
"We don't know if this is a treatment for ED," Goldstein said.
But he and his co-investigator Peter D. Korsak, a gastroenterologist at the University of California, San Francisco, studied how Viagra worked to treat men with ED. They found that the drug increased blood flow to the penis when patients were not getting an erection.
The researchers used a computerized system that was developed by researchers at the University of California San Francisco. It is the first study to test the drug's ability to treat men with ED.
"This was a first, and we are working on more tests, we've been working on other studies," Korsak said.
The researchers also tested the drug on patients who had an erection that was not in the desired or desired state of arousal for about four hours after taking the drug. These patients were asked to take Viagra at least four times a day for four hours after they had an erection.

In a study on the effectiveness of using Viagra with other erectile dysfunction treatments, Goldstein and colleagues showed that the drug could help treat patients who were not getting an erection. ViagraConnect manufacturer, Pfizer, estimates more than a fifth of men aged over 18 in Britain suffer from erectile dysfunction, but almost half of those over 40 have not sought medical help.
The erectile dysfunction drug will be available in 14,000 stores across Britain and via pharmacy websites.
The tablets will be available exclusively from Boots until 10 April.
Those aged 18 and over will be able to buy the tablets following a conversation with a pharmacist or after filling out an online form. Men can ask to speak to a pharmacist in a private consultation room if preferred.
The pharmacists will determine whether treatment is appropriate for the patient and give advice on erectile dysfunction, usage of the medicine and potential side effects. They will advise men to consult with their doctor no less than six months after buying Viagra so that any potential underlying conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or heart disease can be investigated.
A Boots spokesperson said that the man affected by erectile dysfunction should buy the drug themselves wherever practically possible.
Men with severe heart problems, those at high risk of heart problems, liver failure, kidney failure, strokes or those taking certain other medicines, will still need to be prescribed the drug under the supervision of a doctor.
A four-pack of the tablets will cost £19.99 and an eight-pack £34.99.
Men who buy it will be advised that they can take a 50 mg tablet an hour before having sex, but should not use more than one pill a day.
Viagra is is already available as an NHS prescription free of charge for those eligible not to pay for their prescriptions.
The pharmacist will decide how many packs will be supplied in a transaction.
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) announced in November it was to steer men away from buying the tablets from. In 2016 £17m worth of unlicensed and counterfeit Viagra was seized.
Kristie Sourial, Pfizer’s medical manager, said: “It’s important to remember that erectile dysfunction is a medical condition, and that the impact often goes beyond the physical symptoms – it can lead to men feeling anxious, depressed and lacking in confidence.
“Our hope is that the availability of Viagra Connect in pharmacies will encourage men who do nothing about their erectile dysfunction to seek help, and encourage those who are inclined to seek help to do so sooner.”

Despite its widespread availability, numerous misconceptions remain regarding the safety of this medication. One prevalent myth is that sildenafil, as prescribed in Nigeria, is safe and effective for the majority of men with ED. This myth is rooted in the misconceptions and myths that have been circulating among men’s healthcare professionals worldwide since the 1990s. The current study aimed to address this important myth and provide guidance on the safe and effective use of sildenafil, a well-known medication for the treatment of ED.
This research was conducted in accordance with the ethical standards and regulations of the Institutional Review Board (IRB) of Federal University of Mwako, Mwako State, Nigeria, and the Research Ethics Committee (REC) of Federal University of Mwako. Written informed consent was provided to all participants before the study was conducted. A total of 50 participants with the presence of a history of ED were enrolled in this research. The participants were randomized 1:1 to receive sildenafil (20 mg orally once daily, in the morning) or placebo. All participants were instructed to refrain from sexual activity and from consuming alcohol before entering the study and for at least 30 minutes after taking sildenafil. Sildenafil was delivered to the participants through a calibrated pump via a syringe with a 30-g supply. The participants then received a randomization number (RND) to obtain the allocation for the intervention and the control groups. The study was approved by the IRB and all participants signed an informed consent form.
The participants’ baseline characteristics were similar to the baseline data. The sildenafil group had a mean age of 64.1 years, and the placebo group had a mean age of 67.9 years. The duration of ED medication use was 1.5 ± 1.1 years, and the prevalence of ED symptoms was significantly higher in the sildenafil group than in the placebo group (33.0% vs. 23.9%, respectively; p < 0.001). The most common ED symptoms in both groups were erectile dysfunction (28.1% in the sildenafil group vs. 21.6% in the placebo group), followed by headache (21.6%) and vision loss (20.9%).
The mean dosage of sildenafil in the two groups was 25.2 ± 0.8 mg (n = 50) and 25.6 ± 0.8 mg (n = 50) for sildenafil and placebo, respectively.
